A Summer Shower

Dark clouds grazing the horizon,
Trees and grass bending down to the will of the mighty wind.
As it speeds up and crashes into trees,
Clouds covering the skies entirely.

As the wind starts to wail,
The smell of rain starts to pervade.
The parched ground looking eagerly up,
For the sweet nectar from the skies above.

Lightning flashing intermittent,
Sound of thunder not far behind.
Suddenly the rain starts up,
And pouring, it has begun

In the olden days gone by,
The rain was a boon to be had.
Yet in this day of smoke,
Of pollution and ozone holes,
The sweet nectar is made poison.

The pollution that we humans make,
Sulphur dioxide and oxides of Nitrogen,
And all that burning fuel of fossils,
Is turning it all to acid rain,
What was a boon is now a bane.
For do we know what we do?
To this earth that has borne us.

A kick to the stomach is what we do,
By polluting everything in sight.
And in that pollution, we inadvertently,
Kill the millions which we do not see.

Stop Now! For there is still time you see,
It is better too late than never after all.
One step at a time we have to take,
To fix this erroneous mistake.

NaPoWriMo 2016 Day 22

The prompt is

Today’s prompt comes to us from Gloria Gonsalves, who also suggested our prompt for Day Seven. Today, Gloria challenges us all to write a poem in honor of Earth Day. This could be about your own backyard, a national park, or anything from a maple tree to a humpback whale. Happy writing!

Amidst this hot summer, we had a heavy shower of rain today. Talking to few colleagues at work about acid rain made me think of it. Earth Day being the prompt, I just wanted to share this to reduce pollution and at least prevent our situation from growing more dire than it is now.
