Shadows of Midnight

A shadow here, a shadow there,
Lurking all around.
Waiting for the darkness to reign,
Waiting with quiet resolve.

They follow you, where you go.
You can run, you can walk.
But follow you they will,
From your first step to your last breath.

In front of you, it is the embodiment of innocence
Behind you.. what goes on?
Don’t turn around.
For you know not, what your shadow does.

At noon, when it is shortest, it is at its weakest.
The powerful sun quenches the evil of the shadow.
At dawn and dusk, it grows long.
So they say, yet why does it grow?

For at dawn, the sun is powerless,
And at dusk, darkness starts its reign.
At the sun goes down,
They rejoice.

At night, they start to play.
To you and me, it is mere darkness.
But within that darkness,
They rule the world.

At the stroke of midnight,
In the absence of light, search for your shadow.
Then you shall see the,
Multifaceted shades of darkness.

The prompt was

And now for today’s (optional) prompt! Today, I challenge you to write a poem in which you closely describe an object or place, and then end with a much more abstract line that doesn’t seemingly have anything to do with that object or place, but which, of course, really does.

I tried to pick up an object or place to write about. But no idea struck me. Then I thought to write about Shadows. My first ever poem written when I was 5-6 years old was about Shadows. So I decided to honour my younger self and wrote about it. I don’t think it fits the prompt perfectly.. but I am satisfied. So that’s that.
