Natasha – NaPoWriMo 2017 Day 10

In a class of 7 years olds,
She was just one among the kids.
Bit silent and odd perhaps,
But jolly and smiling nevertheless.
Notice her, my mind didn’t,
Till that day when she fell.

Kids falling and scraping their knees,
Shouldn’t be new to someone like me.
Yet in her case, it was more than that,
One of her legs was not like us you see,
It was not of flesh and bones, like you or me.
But a thick wooden shaft, fashioned into a leg.

From that day, my eyes never left her,
This tall, dark girl, with hair in ponytail.
Trying to be normal, as everyone around.
She never let her difficulty become a handicap.
She left school that year end,
And see her I haven’t, from that time hence.

Years and years have passed by from then,
No idea, I have as to her whereabouts.
Yet her name, and her determination,
Stayed with me, through all these years,
That brave young girl, who brought
Awe and inspiration to my 7-year-old self.

NaPoWriMo 2017 Day 10

Today’s prompt

Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that is a portrait of someone important to you. It doesn’t need to focus so much on what a person looks (or looked) like, as what they are or were. If you need inspiration, here’s one of my favorite portrait poems.

A lot of people came to my mind to write about in the portrait poem. But I felt it was fitting to write about Natasha. I don’t remember her last name. Otherwise, I could have found her on facebook ages ago. Her name and her dedication to everything in life though.. it still remains in my mind. I might have been a mere 7-year-old then, but she was the first person who motivated me and her memories will always be with me.

This is dedicated completely to you Natasha, where ever you are.
