Translation:-

One song again

Trying to sing a song again, is the
Broken-winged bird of the forest.
Sitting amidst an axe-eaten Mango tree,
Trying to move its broken wing.
As if with the knowledge of pain, slowly unmoving,
The poor bird starts singing strenuously.
No one is there to sing along, this
Hesitatingly sung song, No mate nor other birds
As from the dawn of time, the little chicks,
Raised with its own body heat,  Had fought
And flown away, never to return.
For no one but itself, in the depths of its heart,
the bird stored the light, the song and the air,
As the night flower bloomed, welcoming the night,
One more song is slowly hummed,
The broken-winged bird of the forest.
To listen to this song, that illuminates the dark,
Are the trees, the rain and even the coldness,
Shadows, river and to nod along is the,
Grass shoots at the tree stump.
And even if no one is there to listen,
A thousand branches and stars await with rapt attention, listening.
In that song is, sweet happiness like honey,
Fledgling dreams, and also endless tears.
As one more song is sung, the bird
Drowns the pain in it, As if neglecting
Thoughts of future flight, it sits alone, hugging itself.
On the stump, leaning and with a moistness
One more song is sung, in beat to its single wing,
by the broken-winged bird of the forest.

The original poem by Sugatha Kumari, in Malayalam

NaPoWriMo

NaPoWriMo 2016 Day 30

The prompt was

And now our prompt (still optional!) Because we’ve spent our month looking at poets in English translation, today I’d like you to try your hand at a translation of your own. If you know a foreign language, you could take a crack at translating a poem by a poet writing in that language.

When I saw the prompt, I decided in an instant that I will pick a poem from Malayalam[Regional language of Kerala in India]. Then came a confusion of which one to pick. There are so many good ones.

Finally I ended up with Sugatha Kumari’s ‘Oru Paatu Pinneyum’ [‘One song again’] from ‘Bhoomiku oru Charamageetham‘ [A Funeral song for Earth].

Sugatha Kumari is a poet and an environmental activist. Her poems are filled with references to Nature and the environmental issues we face.

Though I have tried to write the same in English, it is not the same. There are somethings which just can’t be translated. Also it is not a word for word translation, I took a few liberties here and there.

If you have time check out the video. Even if you do not understand the language, you will be able to feel the sadness in the lines recited.
