Broken Shards – NaPoWriMo 2016 Day 15

Broken Shards

Broken shards

Broken shards all around,
Pricking, poking from the ground.

Kneeling down to peer at it,
A broken face stares at you, bereft.

Is that you, in those shards?
What happened here to make you a discard?

Who broke you apart?
What did they impart?

Oh! I can’t bear to see you like this,
In pieces all amiss.

How beautiful you were then!
Absorbing all that was good, in this world of men!

Repelling evil left and right!
Making life ignite so bright!

Why did you let them break you up?
Why did you let them come close up?

Don’t you know, that they don’t care for you?
Don’t you know, that it’s just not you?

It’s fun, all around for them,
For they care not, even for a gem

Ignore whatever they say to you.
Do whatever feels right to you.

For all this world’s goodness,
Can’t bring back your uniqueness.

But still what I can get back,
T’will be better than this broken wreck.

Put yourself back up,
No one will help you up.

Up you get, and up you stand
On your strongest will so grand.

For all the power in this world,
Can’t break your will power of its stronghold.

NaPoWriMo 2016 Day 15

 The prompt was

Because today marks the halfway point in our 30-day sprint, today I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that incorporates the idea of doubles. You could incorporate doubling into the form, for example, by writing a poem in couplets. Or you could make doubles the theme of the poem, by writing, for example, about mirrors or twins, or simply things that come in pairs.

I started writing about a pond and a lioness looking at its reflection. But these broken shards just forced me to write itself out. I am not sure if the question is being directed at a broken mirror or at a broken person. It feels all the same to me.

Since the poem developed a life of its own, the only controlling I could do was to make it a couplet(Is this a couplet? I am just blindly guessing here.) And try to end each the second line with the same rhyme as the end of the first one.

And that’s it. I just want to sleep now 🙂
